Your family's stories belong to your family. They sync between your family's phones through a private space no other family can see, they are never sold or used for advertising, and you can export or delete everything whenever you like.
Family and storyteller names, questions, written answers and photo captions are stored in your family's own private space on Google's Firebase cloud service (hosted in Europe) so that everyone in the family sees the same stories. Photos and voice recordings are different: they currently stay only on the phone they were made on and are not uploaded anywhere.
Each family's space is completely separate from every other family's, enforced by server rules. Joining a family requires its invite code; nobody outside your family can read your stories.
Your phone receives an anonymous identity, so there is no email address, password or phone number to give us. The family code is the only key.
Voice recordings are kept on the phone that made them. Turning a voice answer into written words happens on the phone itself using Apple's on-device speech recognition; the audio never leaves the phone for that.
These paid features craft the next question by reading the storyteller's recent written answers. When the family uses them, those recent answers (text only, never audio or photos) are sent to our question service and on to Anthropic's Claude, the AI that writes the follow-on question. That text is not used to train AI models, and this happens only for these two features: reading, syncing, voice and the book never involve AI. If your family never switches them on, no story text ever goes to an AI.
Your stories are never sold, never shared with other families, never used for advertising, and never used to train AI systems. Evertold contains no advertising and no third-party analytics.
Subscriptions are processed by Apple. We use RevenueCat to check whether a subscription is active; this involves an anonymous identifier and receipt data, never your name, email or contacts. Payment details are handled entirely by Apple and never reach us.
The microphone and speech recognition are used only when a storyteller answers by voice. The camera and photo library are used only when you choose to add a photo to a story. Notifications are used only for the gentle reminders you switch on.
You can export everything from Settings at any time, and you can delete everything from Settings at any time. Deleting removes the family's cloud space too.
